Who Is Pete Davidson?
It can seem like Pete Davidson managed to soar to fame in no time at all. So, if you aren’t fully familiar with his career, we can’t blame you.
The star began his career as a standup comedian but didn’t take too much time to land roles in front of the camera as well. Since then, he’s taken on a variety of roles, and not all of them as comedic as you might expect. He even has some experience behind the camera as a producer and writer as well. Of course, fans and critics alike have also followed the celebrity’s personal life — especially his love life.
Starting Standup
Davidson has worn a few hats over the course of his career but his earliest work is in a field he’s become pretty famous for — comedy. The comedian was only 16 years old when he performed his first stand-up routine.
No one starts with a Netflix special, though. Instead, he started in his hometown of Staten Island, New York. It was actually on a dare from some friends that Davidson would take to the stage for the first time in a bowling alley.
Appearing on Failosophy
Pete Davidson’s early career focused a lot on two channels. This included MTV — or, more specifically, MTV2 — and Comedy Central.
One of his first television roles was on a series called Failosophy on MTV. Davidson first appeared on the third episode of the show in 2013. The show also featured other famous faces such as Hasan Minaj, Brooke Van Poppelen, and Jessimae Peluso. This was only the start of Davidson’s career and his time on this particular network.
Next Up: Guy Code
Another MTV2 show was featured in the comedian’s early career. This time, Davidson would appear for a longer stint for this television appearance.
Guy Code was a comedic reality series about, well, living as a guy. MTV2 later added a spinoff called Girl Code as a partner show. Davidson would show up in the third season of Guy Code, kicking off the first four episodes before departing from the show.
Comedy Central’s Gotham Comedy Live
Once Pete Davidson started his stint on Comedy Central, he would kick it off with an appearance on Gotham Comedy Live. The show focused on the work of stand-up comedians, putting Davidson right in his element.
This time, though, we’re not referring to Batman’s Gotham but rather performances from the Gotham Comedy Club located in New York City. The comedian appeared on an episode of the show’s second season.
Joining Wild N’ Out
This is one of the MTV roles that Davidson is more recognizable for. It also marked the comedian’s return to MTV2.
At the time, Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out was a fairly popular show on MTV. Davidson would make an extended appearance compared to his earlier MTV2 roles. This time, he was kicking off his first of six appearances on Nick Cannon’s show.
A Cameo in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
It didn’t take long for Davidson to join a comedy cast for a show either. Before the future SNL star would head to 30 Rock, he’d join an episode of another popular show.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has made itself stand out as a comedic take on the usual procedural show. Plus, it’s seen its fair share of comedic actors like Andy Samberg and Chelsea Peretti. Pete Davidson appeared as Steven in 2013, a begrudging member of Amy and Rosa’s outreach program in the episode.
Almost Another Role
2014 was a big year for Pete Davidson’s career. Unfortunately, not every single role panned out for the new star. Davidson has since shared that he was supposed to appear on a show called Sober Companion.
No less, he was set to appear on the pilot of the new Fox show. As sometimes happens, though, it just wasn’t meant to be and the role didn’t make it to air. This was only a year after Fox showcased the young comedian in their Night of Comedy.
An Important Meeting
Sometimes, they say who you know really matters. That definitely helped out Pete Davidson when he met Bill Hader in 2014 on the set of a film.
Another one of Davidson’s early roles was in Trainwreck — which also featured another Saturday Night Live alum, Bill Hader. After meeting, it opened the door for Davidson to audition and Hader put in a good word with Lorne Michaels, longtime producer of the famous sketch comedy show.
Joining Saturday Night Live
Heading to 30 Rock to join the cast of Saturday Night Live is a step in many comedians’ journeys in Hollywood. Davidson’s audition was impressive enough to earn him a spot in the cast, too.
On September 27th, 2014, the comedian would join the ranks of Saturday Night Live for their 40th season and stand out as one of the youngest cast members the show had hired. Starring in skits with impressive guest stars like Norman Reedus and Dwayne Johnson, it didn’t take long for him to stand out as a cast member.
Pete Davidson and Carly Aquilino
Early in his time on SNL, the star’s love life would catch some fans’ eyes for the first time. From 2014 to 2015, Davidson dated Carly Aquilino.
Much like Davidson, Aquilino had worked on MTV2. In fact, she had even been on the partner show to Guy Code we mentioned earlier, Girl Code. The two weren’t as publicly serious as some of Davidson’s future relationships but Aquilino was quick to jump on Instagram and congratulate Davidson on his 2018 engagement.
Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber
There are a few shows and events that are particularly popular over at Comedy Central. One of them is the Comedy Central Roast.
Pete Davidson joined in on this comedic tradition when the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber took place in 2015. He appeared as one of the roastmasters and shared the stage with the likes of Snoop Dogg.
His First Stand-Up Special
It’s not uncommon for accomplished comedians to have a stand-up special or even a few as their career goes on. Davidson had his first special in 2016.
The special was titled Pete Davidson: SMD — which are his late father’s initials — although the comedian wasn’t above joking about the acronym. The special really highlighted the casual, dark, and self-deprecating comedy the comedian would become known for as he rose to greater fame.
A New Romance With Cazzie David
The next relationship that caught people’s eyes was Davidson’s two-year relationship with Cazzie David — daughter of another famous comedian, Larry David — from 2016 to 2018.
At the time, all Davidson told Complex was, “We’re not together anymore […] Very talented girl, she’ll be great and she’ll be fine.” Since their breakup, the two have confirmed that they’re still friends even if they weren’t compatible romantically.
“No One Asked for This”
In 2020, two years after their relationship ended, Cazzie David would speak on the relationship again in more depth but ultimately standing by the fact that the two are friends now.
David discussed this in a series of essays titled “No One Asked for This” among other matters. She discussed some of the personal problems each of the stars dealt with during their relationship. Surprising some, David also revealed the couple split only a day before she heard about his new relationship with Ariana Grande.
Start of His Relationship With Ariana Grande
One of Pete Davidson’s most highly-publicized relationships was his whirlwind romance with pop singer Ariana Grande. A lot happened in this relationship but it actually only lasted five months in 2018.
The news broke that the two were dating very shortly after Davidson’s split from Cazzie David — and they were engaged only weeks after their relationship started. The lovebirds even shared a series of tattoos dedicated to one another.
Falling Fast
As quickly as Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s romance started, it seemed to end just five short months later. Those months were rather action-packed, though!
It wasn’t long after this that he covered one of the tattoos he had gotten for Grande — a tattoo inspired by her album Positions. Much like she released songs like “Pete Davidson” during their relationship, Grande briefly mentioned the split in her music. In her song “Thank U, Next,” there’s the line, “Even almost got married, and for Pete, I’m so thankful.”
New Beginnings With Kate Beckinsale
Soon after his relationship with Ariana Grande came to a close, the comedian was spotted with none other than Underworld actress, Kate Beckinsale. However, it seemed the two were the subject of endless comments about their age difference.
Beckinsale is older than Davidson by about 20 years. Davidson later quipped that there were plenty of men in Hollywood dating younger women, pointing to the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Alec Baldwin.
Splitting From Beckinsale
The relationship between the actress and the comedian wasn’t meant to last, though. They would move on in April 2019 — only about four months after they initially started dating.
The two stayed rather quiet about the split but there were claims that the intense media attention on Davidson’s relationships was more than she was comfortable with. It does seem like there’s always someone keeping an eye on his love life!
Dating Margaret Qualley
Later in 2019, Davidson would find love in the air again. By the time August rolled around, he was spotted with actress Margaret Qualley.
This news first broke when the two were in Venice, Italy for Qualley’s film Seberg, which was playing at the famous Venice Film Festival. During that time, they were seen having a bit of a romantic picnic but the relationship ended by October, meaning they lasted just about two months.
Big Time Adolescence
One of the other celebrity connections Pete Davidson boasts is a close friendship with musician Colson Baker, more commonly known as Machine Gun Kelly. The two have worked together on a few projects now.
Both appeared in the movie Big Time Adolescence in 2019 alongside stars — including Sydney Sweeney of Euphoria fame and Jon Cryer from projects like Two and a Half Men. As well as starring in the film, Davidson tried his hand as an executive producer too.
Comedy Tour With John Mulaney
The two seemed so different at the time, some were surprised to learn that another close Hollywood friend of Davidson’s is fellow comedian John Mulaney, also an SNL alum.
The two even hit the road on a comedy tour together and that came with a slew of media appearances together. Of course, sharing such a history with Saturday Night Live, they had the chance to appear in a few skits together as well.
Alive From New York
Stand-up seemed to be on a roll for Davidson at this point. Shortly after his tour with Mulaney, Davidson had the chance to release another comedy special.
This time, the material would go on Netflix rather than Comedy Central and it reached a wide audience. Titled Alive From New York, the star fills the special with his brand of humor, even taking a few cracks at his relationship with former fiancée, Ariana Grande.
Dating Kaia Gerber
Kaia Gerber is known for her work as both an actress and a model. You might also recognize her as Cindy Crawford’s daughter! Gerber and Davidson dated from October 2019 until January 2020.
When asked about the short relationship later by Charlamagne Tha God, Davidson said, “She’s very young, and I’m […] going through a lot.” He later added, “It’s just like, she should be having fun. She shouldn’t be worrying about some dude that just has issues,” adding, “It just wasn’t the right place or the right time at all.”
“A Message From the Count”
Davidson himself hasn’t released any albums or shown off any musical talent beyond a few musical sketches on SNL. Still, that didn’t stop him from appearing on Machine Gun Kelly’s albums.
He appeared for “A Message From the Count” on 2019’s Hotel Diablo. The next year he’d come back to appear on the interlude for Tickets to My Downfall and again on the interlude for the 2022 album Mainstream Sellout.
A Busy 2019
Even aside from his first appearance on a musical album, 2019 was a rather busy year for the young comedian. He also took on a number of acting roles.
First, he had a small, uncredited role as Danny in What Men Want. Then, he joined Netflix’s biopic about Mötley Crüe, The Dirt, as Tom Zutaut. He even accepted a role in a kid’s movie, specifically to voice Jerry in The Angry Birds Movie 2.
The King of Staten Island
Pete Davidson would throw on his hat as an actor and executive producer again for the 2020 film The King of Staten Island. Even further, Davidson co-wrote this movie as well.
It makes sense — the story is partly fictionalized. But, while Davidson is a character named Scott Carlin, the comedy-drama is clearly inspired by his own experiences. Like many others associated with SNL, Davidson worked with Judd Apatow for this movie.
The Awards (Nominations) Rolling In
Even if you don’t win any awards for a performance, it’s still a pretty big deal to even be nominated for them. That’s some recognition in and of itself! In 2020, the comedian was nominated for a few awards.
This included both the Comedy Movie of 2020 and Comedy Movie Star of 2020 for his work in The King of Staten Island. As if that wasn’t enough, he was also nominated for Comedy Act of 2020 for his special Pete Davidson: Alive From New York.
News From Oliva O’Brien
This one is a little different. Both O’Brien and Davidson have spoken on the nature of their relationship but in different regards.
According to an appearance on the podcast BFFs, O’Brien claimed that she had a short-lived relationship with Davidson in October 2020. However, Page Six later reached out to Davidson’s representatives and heard back that, “There is no truth to this. They were friends and hung out a few times.”
Of Bridgerton Fame
When Bridgerton came out, audiences fell hard for it. In 2021, Davidson and Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor fell for each other for a short time, too.
The relationship between the pair only lasted about five months. However, they seemed serious enough for the comedian to travel to the U.K. to spend time with the actress. Unfortunately, according to some sources, the distance is what broke this pair up by August.
A Heroic Appearance
Like many actors in the last few years, Pete Davidson has been pulled into the world of superhero movies, although he’s not quite in The Avengers.
Rather, the celebrity took up a role in the DC movie that focuses more on the anti-heroes — or sometimes, outright villains — in Suicide Squad. For the film, Davidson took on the heavily-armored mantle of Blackguard or, if you want the man behind the mask in the comics and the movie, Richard Hertz.
The New Joey Ramone
Earlier we mentioned that the comedian was in the biopic The Dirt. Yet, he didn’t exactly take on one of the rock n’ roll personas of the band. It seems like that’s going to change soon, though!
While not taking on the role of Nikki Sixx, Davidson will be stepping into a more punk role. There are few punk bands with the mainstream success The Ramones seem to enjoy now. In fact, it was announced in 2021 that Davidson would play The Ramones’ leading man, the late Joey Ramone, in an upcoming biopic about the band.
Tattoo Announcement
Aside from Davidson’s love life, there’s another aspect of his personal life that has long drawn fans’ attention. That’s the ink he’s collected on his body.
The actor and comedian has garnered a lot of ink over the years and despite his age, has managed to cover a large part of his body. That’s why many fans were shocked in 2021 when he announced he was going to get a lot of them lasered off.
In the Spotlight With Kim Kardashian
While it seems like Pete Davidson is rather open about his life, few stars are quite as ready to publicize every moment as Kim Kardashian.
Rumors started to fly shortly after the two kissed for an SNL skit and were spotted out and about a few times after that. In the beginning, the pair and those around them denied the suspicions that they were dating.
Appearing on The Kardashians
After Keeping Up With the Kardashians ended, fans didn’t have to wait long for more content. Hulu quickly picked up a new reality show, The Kardashians.
While the show varies the format a bit, the general idea is the same. The stars use it to showcase aspects of their personal and professional lives. As such, it was only a matter of time before Pete Davidson appeared on-screen with Kim Kardashian.
An Unfair Backlash
There was one source of backlash that was quick after Davidson and Kardashian went public with their romance. Unsurprisingly, it came from Kanye West, who was formerly married to Kardashian.
The rapper didn’t take long to start publicly harassing the couple, taking shots at and even threatening Davidson in his music, too, shortly after the news of the new relationship broke. At one point, Kardashian stepped in to ask West to cease the behavior.
The End of an Era
Fans of both the comedian and the reality star paid attention to the whirlwind romance of the pair. Alas, this one wasn’t meant to be either. Yet, it seems like it was an amicable split.
The two cited differences such as conflicting work schedules. Both with active careers, it seems like it would be taxing to have to go long-distance for sudden periods of time. The two called it quits in August 2022.
Leaving SNL
All good things must come to an end and so did Davidson’s time at 30 Rock. In May 2022, the star announced that it was his last season on SNL. Davidson, once again speaking to Charlamagne Tha God, said the finale for his last season was “really emotional.”
He went on to explain, “I worked with these guys for a fourth of my life […] I started there with acne and left with tattoos. It was just like a crazy, long period of time, and [I] wasn’t ready for the season to end yet because I was really having so much fun.
Marmaduke
In 2022, Davidson once again dipped into voice acting in a children’s movie to bring a classic, canine character to life on the screen once again.
The movie, simply titled Marmaduke was released on Netflix on May 6th, 2022. The classic character has been around for quite a while, too, giving Davidson a rather iconic role to fill. The first comic strips featuring Marmaduke showed up in the ’50s!
An Almost Space Flight
In 2022, there was a shocking surprise for fans of Pete Davidson when he announced a personal endeavor that almost no one saw coming.
Well, perhaps space travel is becoming a tad more commercial than it used to be. Still, it seems almost futuristic that Davidson was slated to join a trip to space on a Blue Origin rocket. When the flight was rescheduled, though, the comedian couldn’t make it anymore.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
One genre that Davidson hadn’t really dipped his toe into yet was horror. Of course, being who he is, it’s not surprising the role wasn’t dead serious.
He would take on the role of David in 2022 for the film Bodies Bodies Bodies. The movie is a slasher with a healthy dose of dark comedy that starts with a party game gone wrong. It was rather well-received upon its release both by fans and critics.
Meet Cute
On the other end of the spectrum, this wasn’t the only way that Davidson tried something new this year. He also took on a role in the movie Meet Cute.
This time, Davidson starred in a romantic comedy opposite Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory and The Flight Attendant. Like many other romantic comedies, it opted for a time loop plotline but critics ultimately decided it didn’t really stand out from its contemporaries.
A New Relationship With Emily Ratajkowski
Even since his breakup with Kim Kardashian earlier this year, there are rumors that the comedian has already moved on to a new relationship. This time, the stories say that Davidson is dating model and actress Emily Ratajkowski.
Funnily enough, it came not long after radio host Howard Stern made a comment that the pair would make an endearing couple. The relationship reportedly started in November 2022.
A Note From Ratajkowski
The couple didn’t come out with their relationship right away. In fact, it’s so recent, they haven’t commented much on it at all. Interestingly, though, almost a year ago, the model was asked what she thought made the comedian so alluring.
When asked by Seth Meyers, she said “He’s a professional […], he’s got the height, obviously women find him very attractive. He seems super charming. He’s vulnerable. He’s lovely. His fingernail polish is awesome. He looks good!”
High Praise
Ratajkowski’s comments, while a year prior to the two potentially becoming a couple, are nothing short of high praise! Still, those aren’t the only things that Ratajkowski pointed out as a great quality.
She also noted that one good sign came from the comedian’s “super great relationship with his mom.” Davidson has mentioned her many times before — both on SNL and in his standup comedy routines as well.
Pete Davidson and Chase Sui Wonders
Pete Davidson added another woman to his list of girlfriends out of his league with Chase Sui Wonders. The pair met while filming the low-budget horror movie Bodies, Bodies, Bodies but only saw each other as friends initially.
As a newcomer in Hollywood, Wonders knows that dating Davidson has become a rite of passage onto the A-list. According to Pete, though, Chase doesn’t need the help. The comedian has said, “She’s the best actress. She’s gonna crush. She’s got a lot of cool stuff going.”
Pete Davidson has been turning heads since he started his career back in 2013! The star is known for a variety of talents but his fans and critics both have shown a lot of interest in his personal life as well. The comedian and former Saturday Night Live actor has made headlines for everything from his work to his love life and even his tattoos!
